Mrowka Earns First Victory on Opening Day

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Leela Langston recorded a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth as College of Charleston softball beat George Mason, 8-7, Friday evening to go 1-1 on Opening Day.
Head coach Maggie Mrowka picked up her first career win against her alma mater in the second game of the day.
Both of the Cougars' contests went to eight innings Friday with CofC dropping the opener to Marist, 7-6.

GAME 1 CRITICAL POINTS
- Trailing 3-0, Charleston plated a pair in the home half of the second off RBI knocks from Cadence Alberty and Julia Sitterding.
- Halle Cannon leveled the game at three with a leadoff bomb over the center field wall in the fourth before Austy Miller's triple gave the Cougars a 4-3 advantage.
- In extras, Marist scored two runs in the top of the eighth for a 6-4 lead. Cannon drove in Charleston's fifth run of the contest on a double, but CofC was unable to plate the tying run.
- Mackenzie Mathis fanned seven batters across five innings of work in the no-decision.
- Cannon recorded three hits while Sitterding and Alberty each tallied two knocks.
GAME 1 CRITICAL POINTS
- George Mason took a 2-0 lead after crossing the plate in each of the third and fourth innings.
- Charleston countered in the home half of the fourth when Hailey Seymour blasted a three-run shot to dead center and Bronwyn Conroy singled in Abby Driscoll for the 4-2 lead.
- The Patriots did not go away, scoring four of their own in the top of the sixth, but CofC was able to tie the contest back up at six, courtesy of back-to-back singles to left off the bats of Sitterding and Conroy.
- In extras, Charleston was able to hold George Mason to just one run in the top of the eighth.
- Leading off the home half of the frame, Sitterding continued her hot day at the plate, singling home Haley Wolsky before advancing to third on a throwing error.
- Later in the frame with runners on second and third, Langston served a 2-2 offering into right center, scoring Sitterding for the walk off victory.
- Sitterding ended the night with three hits while three other Cougars collected two hits against the Patriots.
- Ryley Kutter hurled four innings in the start, allowing just one earned run while punching out three batters.
OF NOTE
- Sitterding collected five hits in eight trips to the plate Friday while Cannon went 4-for-8 with a double and homer.
- Five of Charleston's 22 hits went for extra bases.
- Mathis pitched in both contests, striking out 10 across 8.0 innings of work.
- Conroy, Alberty and Driscoll made their collegiate debuts Friday.

- CofC continues the Charleston Invitational Saturday with a 3 p.m. matchup against Siena and a 5:30 p.m. contest versus St. John's. Both games air live on FloCollege from Patriots Point.
