
Charleston Defeats USC Upstate 4-3 in Second Game of Doubleheader

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Charleston defeated USC Upstate 4-3 in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader at Patriots Point.
The Cougars are 12-15 following the evening's 1-1 record. Charleston lost 5-0 in the first game of the day.

GAME ONE CRITICAL POINTS
- Down 5-0 in the top of the third, Kendall Thackston struck out one Spartan and allowed no hits.
- In the bottom of the third, Julia Sitterding singled for Charleston's first hit of the game but could not connect before the end of the inning.
- Mackenzie Mathis entered the circle in the top of the sixth and immediately had two strikeouts.
- Austy Miller and Haley Wolsky had two hits in the bottom of the sixth, but the Cougars would not find home base leaving the final score 5-0.
- Leading off for the Cougars in the bottom of the first, Bronwyn Conroy singled to left field and stole second. Leela Langston then singled to third on a 1-1 count and Conroy advanced to third. Hailey Seymour and Halle Cannon walked sending Conroy home for Charleston's first run. Cadence Alberty hit a sacrifice fly to send Langston home for one RBI.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Conroy singled for an RBI and Audri Bates ran home giving the Cougars a 3-0 advantage.
- USC Upstate added three in the top of the fifth and Mackenzie Mathis entered the circle for the Cougars.
- Charleston nearly took the lead after Cannon tripled to right field in the fifth, but the Cougars could not yet finish.
- For the game winning run in the bottom of the sixth, Miller singled up the middle and Julia Sitterding scored from second base. The Spartans would not score in the top of the seventh, ending the game 4-3 on a popout to Miller.
- Miller and Sitterding had hits in each game of the doubleheader.
- Conroy had three hits in the second game against the Spartans. After the doubleheader, the freshman leads the team with a .402 batting average and 35 hits.
- Langston added her 30th hit of the season in the second game.
- In the circle, Mathis had six strikeouts across 4.2 innings pitched. Mathis picked up her seventh win of the season Wednesday night.
- In Kendall Thackston's 4.1 innings pitched in the first game, she struck out five Spartans.
- The Cougars travel for their first conference road series against Campbell beginning Friday, March 13. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. Charleston will play at 2 p.m. and 12 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
- Going into the second weekend of conference play, Charleston holds a 3-0 record after a series sweep over Monmouth at Patriots Point.
