CofC softball splits home opener with Campbell, 7-12 and 2-0

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. ? The College of Charleston lost game one 12-7 to Campbell before securing its first season win in game two, 2-0, in the home opener doubleheader Tuesday night at Patriots Point Field.)

The Cougars will head to Gainseville, Fla., to play in the Cox Communications Classic hosted by Florida. The Camels start their season 1-1 and will travel to Statesboro, Ga., Fri., Feb. 15, to play in the Georgia Southern Invitational.

“I'm proud of how the team battled back after the first defeat,” said CofC Head Coach Shelly Hoerner. “We did some great things behind Shannon's (Howard) pitching.”

Game one saw a total of 11 hits for both CofC and CU. Tiffany Harmon, Katie Nutaitis and Linzi Bereitschaft led the Cougars' offense. Harmon, a junior outfielder went two-for-five from the plate and scored one run. Nutaitis, started in right field and hit three-for-four. The Vienna, Va., native scored two of the Cougars seven runs. Bereitschaft, a freshman first baseman was two-for-three in the campaign. She had four RBI and one run scored.

Campbell's Brittany Stanley (1-0) earned her first win of the season, pitching a complete game. Cougar pitcher Terri Mesko's record fell to 0-4 on the season. The McDonough, Ga., native pitched 7.1 innings striking out eight batters and recording 12 six earned runs.

Charleston turned the tables in game two, defeating CU 2-0. Junior pitcher Shannon Howard (1-2) gets credit for the first win of the season.

Nutaitis went two-for-three at the plate, adding half of CofC's four hits Harmon and Kristi Woodall went one-for-two and one-for-three, respectively. Woodall, a freshman from Minooka, Ill., and Kristie Shifflett had the Cougars' two RBI.

Charleston will face Stetson at 1:30 p.m. Fri., Feb. 15, in its first game in the Cox Communications Classic.
