Mount Pleasant, S.C. – Jordin Jones had five hits and drove in five runs to lead the College of Charleston to a doubleheader victory over Drexel by scores of 7-3 and 4-1 on Friday at Patriots Point.
The Cougars (22-13, 3-2 CAA) will go for the series sweep on Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be a Bark at the Park Day, with fans encouraged to bring their favorite furry friends, and there will also be a postgame Holiday egg hunt in the outfield.
Jones jumpstarted the Charleston offense with a two-run homer in the first inning of the opener and added a pair of singles including a two-run base hit as part of a four-run fourth that gave the Cougars a 7-0 lead.
The home run was the team-leading fourth of the season for the senior outfielder and the 20th of her career. The five RBI on the night increased her career total to 102 and moved her into eighth place in school history.
In addition to her three hits, Jones also walked and scored on a Taylor Belfiore double in the third. The production was more than enough for the pitching combination of Izzy Berouty and Kylie Burke, with Berouty earning her 12th win of the year, allowing seven hits and striking out three in five innings. Burke worked the final two innings and gave up only one unearned run with a strikeout.
The second game was scoreless heading into the bottom of the fourth when Jones blooped a double into right and scored when Belfiore hit a hard liner off the fence in straightaway center for another two-base hit. The Cougars added three more in the fifth, including RBI singles by Jones and Kelly Sinclair.
Taylor DuPree had one hit in the doubleheader to move within two of breaking Amanda Cone's school record of 251 career hits.
Summer Jenkins (8-6) allowed five hits and one run with four strikeouts in five innings before Berouty came on in the sixth and turned in a masterful relief performance for her third save of the year. Drexel had a run in and the bases loaded with nobody out when Berouty retired the final three batters on a pop up, strikeout and grounder to second.
Berouty then worked an uneventful seventh to pick up the seventh save of her two-year career to tie Sam Martin's school record.
