North Charleston, S.C. – Taylor DuPree became the all-time hits leader in College of Charleston history with a sixth-inning single in the Cougars' 5-4 loss to Charleston Southern.
DuPree's one-out base hit was the 251st of her career, moving the senior third baseman past Amanda Cone for the top spot in Charleston history. She then added to her school stolen base record with career theft number 87 and scored on a Yari Felix base hit to cut what had been a 5-1 deficit down to one, but the Cougars couldn't complete the comeback.
In addition to her marks for hits and stolen bases, DuPree currently has the highest batting average in the 26-year history of the Cougar softball program. Her average of .390 through Tuesday's game is 20 points higher than second-place Jacquie Rothey.
Charleston (22-15) outhit CSU, 13-7, but left 12 runners on base in losing to the Bucs for the first time in 14 games. Felix led the Cougars with three hits and two runs, Kelly Sinclair had two hits and drove in two runs to increase her team RBI lead to 36, and Jordin Jones and Sara Garcia also had a pair of base knocks.
The Bucs scored twice in the first on a two-run homer by Mallory Kasinger and added a run in the second for a 3-0 lead. Felix, Jones, Taylor Belfiore and Sinclair had consecutive singles in the third to get one back but left the bases loaded.
Sinclair and Alondra Vicary had run-scoring singles in the fifth to make it 5-3, and the Cougars had runners at second and third with one out after the DuPree run in the sixth but stranded both. Vicary and Garcia drew leadoff walks in the seventh, but again Charleston was denied the tying and lead runs.
Kylie Burke went the first three innings in the circle and allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits. Summer Jenkins came in with one out in the fourth and allowed only two hits and one run over her three innings.
The Cougars return to Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend with a doubleheader at Hofstra on Saturday at 2 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at noon.
