Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – Summer Jenkins and Izzy Berouty combined to allow only two hits in 5.2 innings of shutout relief, and Lexee Emanuel and Chandler Sparkman both drove in two runs to lead the College of Charleston to a 5-2 win over Delaware in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader at Patriots Point.
Berouty then tossed a complete game in the nightcap but was bested by Delaware's Sarah Piening in a 1-0 Blue Hen victory. The teams remain tied in the CAA standings with 6-11 league records heading into Sunday's series finale at noon.
Delaware (20-26 overall) jumped out to a 2-0 lead and put a runner on with one out in the second when Jenkins relieved starter Drayton Siegling. Jenkins retired the final two batters of that inning and went on to pitch five innings of two-hit ball, setting down eight Blue Hens in a row between the fourth and sixth frames.
With two on and one out in the seventh, Berouty came in and got a fly out to right and pop out to second to secure her third save of the season while extending her school career record to 10. Jenkins picked up her third win of the year.
The Cougars (22-26 overall) got a run back on a Kelly Sinclair sacrifice fly in the second before putting together five straight hits to start the third. Yari Felix, Noel Dominguez and Brittany Vicary singled to load the bases, and Emanuel drove in two with a base hit, upping her team-leading RBI total to 23. Chandler Sparkman followed with a run-scoring double to give Charleston a 4-2 lead.
Emanuel singled and scored on a base hit by Sparkman in the fifth for an insurance run. The duo along with Dominguez each had two hits as the top four in the Cougar lineup had seven hits in 11 official at bats.
The Cougars had seven hits in the second game but were unable to break through against Piening, who started both ends of the twinbill. Charleston left six on base including two in the sixth after singles by Gracyn Thrasher and Madi Brown put runners on first and second with only one out.
Sparkman, who added two more hits in the nightcap, singled with two outs in the seventh to bring up the potential winning run, but she was stranded at first.
