ELON, N.C. - The College of Charleston softball team split Saturday's doubleheader with Elon by scores of 8-0 and 9-1. Both games ended in the sixth inning by run rule.
Charleston was shut out by Elon in the first game and only reached base by two walks from Karlee Hughes and Mary-Kathryn Scott.
The Cougars bounced back with a dominant performance in the second game led by Malaka Belser who finished 3-4 with 5 RBI and a HR.
Belser hit a ball through the middle in the top of the first that Elon's defense mishandled, allowing Aniz Roman to score the first run and Karlee Hughes to advance to third. Sierra Paradis then hit a sacrifice fly to deep right that brought Hughes home for an early 2-0 lead.
Belser struck again with a two-run shot to left field in the third inning and followed up in her next at bat in the fifth with a bases-loaded single to score the fifth run.
Shealyn Starks stepped up to the plate in the sixth and drove in a two RBI single followed by Hughes' double to left field. Belser continued her hot streak to send home the final two runs and make it a 9-0 game.
The Phoenix scored one unearned in the bottom of the sixth, but Caroline Conner struck out the final batter to pick up her fifth strikeout and clinch the win.
