CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston softball team exploded for a 12-0 win over Hampton in five innings before falling 8-3 to the Pirates in Sunday's twin bill in Virginia.
Aniz Roman walked with the bases loaded and Shealyn Starks followed up with an RBI ground-out to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the Cougars' record 12 run win.
Malaka Belser broke open the game with a two-run shot over the wall in the third inning, and Savannah Lockhart hit an RBI single in the same frame for a 9-0 lead after two Pirate errors allowed for three of the Cougar runs.
Karlee Hughes doubled in the fourth to bring home another run, and Kaytlin Stacey hit a two-RBI single with two outs to continue the Cougars' overpowering offensive production.
McKenna Kelly picked up her third win, only allowing four hits and striking out three in four innings of work.

The Cougars responded with a three-run third inning led by Roman's ground-out RBI that was immediately followed up by Halle Cannon's double to left field to tie the game. Starks then hit an RBI single to gain the advantage for Charleston.
The Pirates rallied in the fifth to produce four runs and added two more insurance runs in the sixth to secure the series win over the Cougars.
