Cougars Fall to Hofstra in Series Opener

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston lost to Hofstra, 7-3, in the opening game of a CAA series Thursday at Patriots Point.
Brooke Marquez had a huge game for the Cougars, going 3-for-3 while also making two stellar defensive plays to end Pride scoring opportunities.
Hofstra scored a run in the first and threatened for more in the second, but Marquez ranged far to her left to field a grounder and get the out at first. An inning later, she dove to snare a line drive and doubled off a runner at second to keep it a one-run game.
Marquez also played a role in the Cougars tying it in the third. After Karlee Hughes reached second on an error, Marquez grounded a single up the middle and the duo pulled off a double steal with Hughes scoring to even it up.
The Pride scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth before Charleston again rallied on a Marquez double, a single by Kaytlin Stacey and a two-run base hit by Mia Dittoe.
Hofstra then scored three runs over the next two innings to thwart the Cougar comeback.
The teams play the middle game of the series Friday at 3 p.m.
