Cougars Gain Series Ending Win over Marshall

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston built an early six-run lead and held on for a 6-4 win over Marshall in the final game of the series at Patriots Point.

The Cougars continue their 14-game homestand to open the season when they host Queens on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Patriots Point.

Game Summary
- Mackenzie Mathis gained her first career win in the circle, allowing three earned runs and striking out four in 4.1 innings.
- Ryley Kutter entered in the fifth and blanked the Thundering Herd over the final 2.2 innings to pick up the save.
- The Cougars started hot with four runs in the first, including RBI singles by Sierra Paradis and Karly Smith.
- Karlee Hughes produced the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. Hughes and Jay Wrightsman both had two hits.
- Audri Bates executed a perfect squeeze bunt to bring home Hughes, and Sally Trent drove home a second run in the third to make it 6-0.
- Trent later singled in the fifth for her first career base hit.
- Kutter entered with two on in the fifth and got a pop up to second that resulted in a double play when Hughes gunned down a runner at the play for a twin killing.
- Marshall put two on in the seventh but a fly out to left stranded the tie runs on base.
