Cougars Dominate Pirates in Series Opener

The Cougars move to 22-22 on the season with an 11-5 CAA record. Charleston is now on a two-win streak.
Halle Cannon and Austy Miller hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the first for an early lead.
CRITICAL POINTS
- In the top of the first, Bronwyn Conroy singled for a base hit and then recorded her 32nd stolen base of the season to reach scoring territory. Cannon hit her third home run of the season for two RBI to put CofC ahead. Miller added another home run during her at bat for a 3-0 advantage after the first frame.
- Hampton responded with a three-run homer to tie the game after one inning.
- Julia Sitterding reached first to send Sierra Paradis home for an RBI and a 4-3 lead in the top of the second. Hampton tied it up once more with a single home run in the bottom of the frame.
- The Cougars recorded a three-run top of the third, beginning with Abby Driscoll scoring from third on a wild pitch. Sitterding then hit a two RBI double, and Paradis and Cadence Alberty scored.
- Driscoll singled on the first pitch for an RBI and Miller added Charleston's eighth run of the day. Savannah Scott scored on a wild pitch and Driscoll added a run for a 10-4 lead in the top of the fourth.
- Charleston recorded five runs in the top of the fifth, including Scott reaching on a fielder's choice to send Leela Langston and Cannon home. The Pirates would not add any more runs in the bottom of the inning, leaving the final score 15-4.
- The Cougars scored two home runs for 14 total on the season.
- Conroy led the game with four hits and tallied one stolen base.
- Every batter for the Cougars recorded a run against Hampton Friday evening including Miller who tallied three.
- Mackenzie Mathis had two strikeouts in the circle for 94 total this season.
- Charleston remains at Hampton and game two of the series is set for 3 p.m. Saturday, April 18.
