MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Charleston lost 7-6 against UNCW in the first game of the series at Patriots Point Friday night.
The Cougars move to 24-25 overall and 12-7 in CAA play following the loss.
Mackenzie Mathis tallied her 100th strikeout of the season in the first inning and struck out five total Seahawks.

- UNCW scored two runs in the first inning, but the Cougars responded with a two-run bottom of the second, beginning with Halle Cannon scoring from first off two Seahawk errors. Hailey Seymour then hit an RBI single to send Sam Horn home for the tying run.
- Both teams went scoreless until Charleston had a four-run bottom of the sixth. Horn doubled with bases loaded for two RBI. Austy Miller then scored on a Seymour groundout to second for the third run of the inning. Finally, Abby Driscoll grounded out for an RBI and Horn confirmed the sixth Cougar run.
- The Seahawks would respond with a five-run top of the seventh and Charleston would not answer despite Leela Langston reaching third in the bottom of the inning.
- Mathis now has 104 strikeouts on the season and threw 153 pitches against the Seahawks Friday.
- Six Cougars recorded hits for nine total.
- Miller is on a four-game hitting streak and had one hit and one run vs. UNCW.
- Charleston will host UNCW Saturday, April 25 at 3 p.m. and Sunday, April 24 at 12 p.m.
- Saturday's game is Fan Appreciation Day, and Charleston branded belt bags will be given away while supplies last. There will also be a face painter at the game.
